Canada’s West Coast Ports Role in the Global Supply Chain
Safely Moving $1.1B of Cargo Every Day
The 91ͬ־ and our members are proud to provide well-paying, family supporting jobs that drive economic growth and enhance the social well-being of Canadians.
Every day, Canada’s West Coast ports are responsible for the safe handling of $1.1 billion in cargo, representing 50% of Canada’s trade with partners outside North America. B.C.’s maritime operators invest millions in infrastructure upgrades to enhance port efficiency, while contributions to federal Port Authorities support public services and infrastructure development.
B.C.’s maritime employers are a vital link in the global supply chain and significant generators in the economic engine of Canada.

Technology and Jobs
Modernization grew the waterfront workforce
Between 2009 and 2025, B.C. terminals introduced new technology, including semi-automated cranes, remote operating rooms and automated gates. Over the same period the waterfront workforce grew by more than 70%, payroll hours rose 83% and earnings reached record levels. Investment in terminals and in training has moved in step with more cargo, more hours and more of the well-paying, family-sustaining jobs the waterfront has long provided. A new report prepared by KPMG LLP for the 91ͬ־ examines what that has meant for the people who move Canada’s cargo.
